London Metal Exchange Helps Sir John
Cass Students Set Their Sights On University (February)
A
new mentoring programme between a Tower Hamlets secondary
school and a City-based business got underway this week
(30 January) when students from Sir John Cass Foundation
and Red Coat School visited the London Metal Exchange (LME).
The project represents the second stage
in a growing relationship brokered by Tower Hamlets Education
Business Partnership. In September 2011, the LME announced
four bursaries of £2,000 per year to help fund the
university careers of four exceptional Sir John Cass students.
Four more bursaries will be added each year so that eventually,
12 students will be involved in the scheme.
Now, the LME has turned its attentions
to helping the aspirations of those students who might take
advantage of a bursary opportunity in the sixth form. Seventeen
of the school's brightest Year 9 students, or those who
have the potential to achieve a good university place, have
been chosen for the mentoring scheme. Volunteer mentors
from the LME will meet with the students, for an hour, on
a monthly basis. Sessions are designed to assist the young
people with a variety of issues including boosting their
confidence and motivation, outlining career options, choosing
the most appropriate study subjects and discussing what
university life is like.
Mentors and mentees met, for the first
time, this week at the LME's headquarters in Leadenhall
Street. The students had the opportunity to see live trading
'in the ring' as metals were bought and sold by a traditional
method that dates back more than a century.
Over lunch, both parties got to know one
another better. Marcos Castro, an assistant company secretary
at the LME will mentor Mumin Ahmed. Marcos said: "We
are fortunate to work in rather privileged surroundings,
so it's good to be able to give something back to the community.
And, if you can change someone's life for the better, then
that must be a good thing."
A little overtaken by shyness, Mumin
said he was pleased to have Marcos as his mentor. "I
hope he is going to help me choose my GCSE options. I don't
know if we share anything in common but I think I will find
out soon."

Field Fisher Waterhouse Joins St Paul's
(January)
Tower
Hamlets EBP has a new business supporter with law firm,
Field Fisher Waterhouse signed up as Reading Partners at
St Paul's Whitechapel CE Primary School.
No fewer than 41 volunteers, including
fee earners, secretarial and support staff, will be spending
a weekly lunch hour helping Year 2 pupils at the school.
Maurice Tunney, who co-ordinates the scheme
at Field Fisher Waterhouse, said: "We had an overwhelmingly
positive response from staff eager to volunteer, with more
than 40 people signing up to get involved. Given the startling
figures relating to literacy in London, being able to give
back to the community will be a very fulfilling and rewarding
experience, we can't wait to get started."
The Partners made their first visit
this week, despite the rainy weather, and we wish both parties
a long and fruitful relationship.

Insurance Volunteers Contribute To
Globe's Festive Spirit (December)
Volunteers
from Syndicate 1206, Sagicor at Lloyd's are giving up their
time to help pupils at Globe Primary School in Bethnal Green.
Five members of the firm's staff turned
out to run the biscuit icing, tombola and 'tattoo' stalls
at the school's annual Winter Fayre (2 December) and employees
donated various toys, books, games and DVDs to sell. Moreover,
the City-based company has assisted Globe and its pupils
in a variety of ways since the relationship started just
a few months ago.
As members of the Lloyd's Community Programme,
which does a huge amount of work in Tower Hamlets schools,
via Tower Hamlets Education Business Partnership, Sagicor
was introduced to Globe to start a Reading Partners scheme
with Year 1 (5 and 6 year-old) pupils. Sixteen volunteers
are involved, co-ordinated by Paul Marden, Sagicor's Head
of Marketing and Communications. "I am currently reading
with a delightful little girl called Amira but since getting
to know Globe, it became evident that there was so much
more we could do. The school SATs results are very good
for English but there is an imbalance with maths, so we
are about to help the children with a maths (Number Partners)
scheme starting next week," Paul says.
Sagicor also has a variety of other projects
in the pipeline, thanks to Paul's commitment and drive.
These include handing out fruit and healthy snacks at a
Healthy Breakfast Day, creating a vegetable garden, painting
and general DIY over the February half term and Easter breaks,
taking the children on a visit to the Lloyd's Building and
to orchestra concerts.
Globe Primary School's Deputy Headteacher,
Dale Pendlebury is delighted at how the partnership is blossoming.
"We're really excited and the kids absolutely love
the Reading Partners scheme. To them, it's like having a
relative turn up each week. It has really helped their speaking
and listening skills and now we hope Sagicor can do the
same to help the pupils with their maths. In addition, it
is good for Globe to make wider links with the community."
Volunteers from law firms Memery
Crystal, Faegre and Benson and Kemp Little plus accountants
Buzzacott, are also involved at the school.

Langdon Park Acknowledged For Sporting
Enterprise (December)
Langdon
Park School's innovative approach to linking sport with
enterprise has won it a 'School of the Month' award from
awarding body, NCFE.
Year 11 students are working towards the
NCFE Certificate in Developing Enterprise Capabilities but,
as a designated sports college, Langdon Park has linked
this to a Certificate in Sports Coaching qualification.
The enterprise element is delivered by
Tower Hamlets Education Business Partnership and sponsored
by Citi, which has developed a special relationship with
the school.
Langdon Park is only a mile from the Olympic
Park, so much of the learning activity has centred around
the London 2012 Games. The young people have been looking
at the bidding process for the 2012 and 2018 Games, the
legacy of the stadium and an assignment based around staging
the Games at an alternative venue if Stratford suddenly
became unavailable.
The study course also includes a visit
to Tottenham Hotspur FC to explore football as a business
and the process of running a football club.
There are non-sporting enterprise activities
too that focus on budgeting, setting objectives, managing
expenditure, the marketing mix and planning a presentation.
The latest programme of work got
underway last week when students, aided by Citi volunteers,
began designing their own board games. They will develop
their ideas and products over the coming weeks with teams
pitching their prototypes and costings to a Dragon's Den-style
panel of judges in February.
